Classic Speaker Characters

As with amps, a few speaker base colors have established themselves over the years as references. Knowing them helps decode tone descriptions — and here too: description, not verdict.

British, midrange, singing — The Celestion Greenback character: midrange-focused, breaking up early, with a characteristic roughness when pushed. Tonally tied closely to classic British rock.

British, loud, tight — The Celestion "Vintage 30" character: higher power handling, present upper mids, tight bass. A modern standard for rock and high-gain.

American, clean, bell-like — The Jensen/Fender speaker character: bright, clear highs, soft saturation — the basis of the American clean tradition.

Neutral, rugged, loud — The EV/JBL character: high power handling, lots of headroom, very direct and loud, with less coloration of its own — favored where level and clarity matter.

These characters can be mixed (different speakers in one cab) and swapped — a speaker change is one of the most effective and, relatively, cheapest tonal changes to an amp. The framing stays important: no speaker sounds "right", it fits or doesn't fit the amp, the music and the room. And the most expensive is not automatically the fitting one.
