DAW Basics
A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is the software in which you record, edit, mix and master — the central workbench of any recording. You don't have to master all of it, but a few basic terms make the start much easier.
What a DAW does — It records audio and MIDI tracks, arranges them on a timeline, allows cutting and editing, and finally mixes everything to a stereo file. Amp simulations, effects and processing run as plugins inside the DAW.
Core terms — Track: a recording lane (e.g. guitar, vocals). Latency: the small delay between playing and hearing; a good interface and suitable buffer settings keep it low enough for tracking. Buffer size: small buffer = low latency but higher CPU load; large buffer = the reverse. Sample rate / bit depth: the resolution of the recording (44.1 kHz / 24 bit is a solid standard).
Interface — The audio interface connects guitar/microphone to the computer and largely determines sound quality and latency. Important for guitar: a high-impedance instrument input (Hi-Z) so the signal doesn't go thin.
Common references — Common DAWs include Ableton Live, Logic Pro (macOS), Pro Tools, Cubase, Studio One, FL Studio and Reaper (lean and cheap); many interfaces come with stripped-down versions (e.g. Pro Tools Intro, Cubase LE). Reference points, not a ranking — none is "the right one"; they differ in operation and focus, not in achievable quality.
Framing — All common DAWs can deliver excellent recordings; the choice is a matter of habit and workflow, not quality. More important than the software is picking one and staying with it until the workflow sits.
