Dots, fingers, and the signs O and X

A dot says: put a finger on this string in this fret. A number in or beside the dot means the finger — 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 pinky. Above the grid two signs often appear: an O means "let this string ring open," an X means "don't play this string." That fully describes a shape.
