Modes — a brief look ahead

The section on minor showed that starting the major template on its sixth note produces minor. Starting it on the second, third, or fourth note produces further colorings, each with its own character.

These colorings are called modes (mode = manner of playing). The point isn't the list but what stands behind it: they aren't new scales. Every mode is the same major scale viewed from a different one of its notes — the same principle as minor, taken further.

Modes belong to advanced soloing and aren't covered in depth here; guitarists in popular music rarely encounter them. It's enough to know that the term doesn't hide an additional system.
