Playing songs and practicing aren't the same thing.

Playing songs is fun; skill comes from practicing — the two aren't the same. Anyone who keeps repeating the same three or four songs doesn't move forward; a large share of new players stalls exactly here, because playing doesn't replace targeted practice.
