Six lines are six strings

Tab is six horizontal lines — the six strings, laid out lengthwise, as if the guitar lay flat in front of you. The bottom line is the thickest string, the top the thinnest. That's exactly the reverse of the diagram, where the strings stood vertical and the thickest was on the left — the two notations see the guitar from two directions. Once memorized, it holds everywhere.
