Slow is fast

The tempo reflex is the beginner's biggest enemy. Playing a spot faster than you can play it cleanly practices the mistakes in — and because the brain repeats what it does (including the wrong things), fast-and-sloppy is harder to fix than not practiced at all. First play slowly enough that every note sits, then nudge it up. Clean-and-slow beats fast-and-sloppy every time — that's not a test of patience but the shortest route to the goal.
