Syncopation & accents

Take an evenly accented pattern and move a single accent from the count onto the "and," and the drive changes immediately. The effect is familiar from funk, reggae, and much of pop guitar.

When the accent doesn't fall on the full count, it's called syncopation or off-beat. The mechanism builds directly on the pendulum: the pendulum stays unchanged, only an accent moves from the count onto an in-between swing. The pattern runs on as before, the weight simply sits elsewhere. A single displaced accent noticeably changes the effect of a simple chord progression — it's the difference between uniform strumming and playing that moves.
