The eighth-note grid

The arrows sit in the counted bar from music theory: 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and. Each slot is an eighth; the numbers usually take a downstroke, the "and"s an upstroke. So the steady up-and-down becomes a readable grid — you see at a glance where a strike lands and where not.
