When the diagram isn't at the nut: the position marker

Some shapes sit further up the neck. Then the thick nut line is missing, and beside the grid stands a small note like "5fr" or a roman "V" — it says: the top fret shown is the fifth, not the first. Without that marker you'd read the shape in the wrong place.
